This is really cool cutting edge science, the Glymphatic System

gut health Apr 04, 2022

Ok, if you have been in my community for a while then you know that I love science and do my best to stay on top of the newest that's out there. In addition, I am always eager to learn strategies and drills that we can apply to create positive change. So today, let me introduce you to the Glymphatic System! The glymphatic system has been first named in 2013, so not that long ago. There is still a lot of research needed to understand its full function but it is already known to be a very important system regarding overall health, Alzheimer's, and other brain-related dysfunctions.

I have shared information about the lymphatic system in past Supercharge emails; it performs a number of roles, one of which is clearing metabolic waste from the gaps between cells. However, the central nervous system which comprises the brain and spinal cord does not have any true lymphatic vessels.

Now we know that the glymphatic system is a network of vessels that clear waste from the central nervous system (CNS). It is most active during sleep. Another extremely good reason to get good quality and quantity of sleep.

HOW TO IMPROVE THE GLYMPHATIC SYSTEM FLOW

Strategy #1 SLEEP

If you are not getting 7-9 hours of good quality sleep, then it is time to take action. There are many factors that impact sleep. Start with a regular bedtime, eliminating screens 1-2 hours before bedtime, and manage your stress throughout the day by taking active breaks, meditation, and putting the phone down. After that evaluate your diet.

Sleeping on the left side is most beneficial. More to this topic in next week's Supercharge. Stay tuned!

Strategy #2 LYMPH WORK

The glymphatic system drains into the lymphatic system. Activating the lymph system will help from the bottom up. Two years ago, I shared a warm-up that includes a lymph activation: Click here to check it out. The rubbing below the ear right by the jaw is also very important.

Strategy #3 ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET

The gut is called the little brain. We've known for a while now that the gut and the brain are connected via the vagus nerve. If you have health issues or do not feel that your well-being is as good as it could be (kind of almost all of us) then eliminate or reduce inflammatory foods like sugar, red meat, and processed foods to name a few. Instead eat more vegetables, fruits, and nuts.
