Have you tried alternate nostrils or just single nostrils breathing before? Alternate nostrils breathing is a breath control practice in yoga and meditation but it is also a great practice to add to any daily routine.

Alternate nostril breathing, also known as Nadi Shodhana or "balanced breathing," is a yogic breathing technique that involves breathing in and out through one nostril at a time. Here are a few potential benefits of alternate nostril breathing:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety: Alternate nostril breathing has been shown to have a calming effect on the mind and body, reducing stress and anxiety.

  2. Improves respiratory function: The alternating breathing pattern of alternate nostril breathing can help to improve respiratory function and increase lung capacity.

  3. Balances the nervous system: Alternate nostril breathing is believed to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which can lead to a sense of calm and relaxation.

  4. Increases focus and concentration: Practicing alternate nostril breathing can help to improve focus and concentration, which can be particularly helpful for tasks that require sustained attention.

  5. Enhances overall well-being: Regular practice of alternate nostril breathing can lead to an overall sense of well-being, improving mood and promoting feelings of peace and contentment.

It's important to note that the benefits of alternate nostril breathing are largely anecdotal, and more research is needed to fully understand the effects of this technique on the mind and body. However, many people find alternate nostril breathing to be a helpful tool for managing stress and improving overall well-being.

Here is one version of alternate nostril breathing:

  1. Sit or stand tall
  2. Use the right thumb and cover your right nostril.
  3. Inhale through the left nostril.
  4. Hold your breath while covering the left nostril with the ring finger or pinky and uncover the right nostril (move your thumb away)
  5. Exhale through the right nostril (while the left is covered)
  6. Keep your left nostril covered while inhaling through the right nostril.
  7. Hold your breath and use your thumb to cover the right nostril and open your left nostril.
  8. Exhale through the left nostril.
  9. Repeat.

In short: inhale left, hold, exhale right, inhale right, hold, exhale left

Note: alternate nostril breathing is safe for most people. If you have asthma or other lung conditions start very slowly and stop if it does not feel right to you.
