Take Charge With These 3 Mindset Shifts

mindset Aug 21, 2023

We expect that our body and brain are reliable and run at max capacity all the time. There is no time for being sick and not enough to take care of preventive masseurs for our health. We live in a world where medical advancements are happening at an unprecedented pace, and we're often told that there's a pill, procedure, or expert for every ailment. We expect that doctors and medicine can fix everything. Well, we are not a car or any other machine where we can just exchange and replace parts. The body and brain are more complex and there is no quick fix. Our system needs a holistic approach and we need to shift our mindset from “the doctor will fix it” to “I am in charge of my own health”. Don’t get me wrong, doctors are a vital part of the big picture but they are only one part of many when it comes to achieving optimal sustainable health.

Moving from passive to active in your health journey requires a significant mindset shift. It means taking responsibility for your well-being, understanding that each choice – your choice. It's about empowering yourself with knowledge and being an active participant in your care, rather than a passive recipient.

#1 Mindset: Your Health is an Ongoing Project, not a Destination:

Health isn't a one-time achievement; it's an ongoing journey. It involves daily choices, routines, and awareness. Relying solely on doctors means you're only addressing issues after they arise. Instead, consider adopting preventive measures and being proactive in your health decisions.

#2 Mindset: Modern Medicine is limited:

While modern medicine is miraculous in many ways, it isn't the one and only solution. We still don’t know exactly how all of our systems work and interact. No body system works alone. Some ailments require a more integrative approach. Chronic conditions, in particular, often benefit from a combination of medical treatment, targeted brain-based exercises, and lifestyle changes.

#3 Mindset:  Health is holistic well-being

The term "holistic" has become a buzzword in health circles in recent years, often linked with alternative medicine or spiritual practices. But at its core, holistic well-being is a simple, comprehensive approach to health that recognizes the interconnectedness of the brain, body, mind, and spirit. It underscores that true health is not just about the absence of physical ailments but also the harmony of mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our lives.

Physical Health: This includes the regular functioning of our body systems. It's maintained through proper nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep.

Emotional Health: It involves understanding, managing, and expressing our feelings in a productive manner. This includes coping with stress, cultivating resilience, and nurturing positive relationships. Humans are inherently social beings. Our relationships, connections, and sense of belonging play a significant role in our overall well-being.

Mental Health: This focuses on cognitive abilities and psychological well-being.

Spiritual Health: Regardless of religious beliefs, spiritual health revolves around finding meaning and purpose in life, often through connection, reflection, meditation, or religious practices.

Each component of health impacts the others. For instance, chronic physical ailments can lead to depression (mental health), while chronic stress (emotional health) can lead to physical ailments like high blood pressure. Recognizing these connections helps in devising comprehensive wellness strategies.

We have to stop thinking that every health concern can be handed off to a medical professional. While doctors play an undeniable role in our health, it's essential to recognize that true well-being requires our active participation. Embrace the empowerment of self-care, make that mindset shift, and watch as your quality of life improves in ways you never thought possible. Your health is your wealth, and you have more control over it than you might think.
